Librería Pérgamo, Madrid, Spain

Librería Pérgamo is the oldest bookstore in Madrid, due to the gradual disappearance of other former oasis of the printed word. Founded in 1946 by Mr. Raúl Serrano, Librería Pérgamo entered the 21st century under the guidance of his daughters Lourdes and Ana, who upon retirement rented out the beloved space, which to this day continues to be read by many generations of readers, many of whom are still children who learned to read from its shelves during their childhood.

With the spirit of the old wood of its shelves intact, Pérgamo is a forest whose clearing comfortably accommodates up to 30 guests for book presentations, lectures, and discussions, as well as the daily festival of conversations and recommendations shared by visitors with the booksellers. Here, we discuss books and authors, whether they’re ghostwriters or young writers recently published for the first time. Here, we privilege the diverse and different genres of literature, and we offer a worthy selection of titles in history and other social sciences… and if we don’t have it, we’ll order it.

The team that sustains the vitality of an indispensable cultural space is guided by a love of books and reading, the flower of conversation, debate, and civilization whose salvation as a planet, in every country, and in every person, depends on the written word, on what we read—have read, and will read—in books.

Desperate Literature is a joint project between Charlotte Delattre and Terry Craven, and originally co-founded along with Corey Eastwood and Craig Walzer.

We’re currently joined by our marvelous staff: Jorge Domingo Moron, Sasha Heider, Gloria Lizana Iglesias & Daniela Ruiz Moreno.

Desperate Literature is an international bookshop in Madrid, Spain. Along with the very best collection of used English and French books in the city, the shop also carries a large selection of quality books in Spanish and a variety of other languages.

With a focus on fiction, poetry, noir, sci-fi and belles-lettres, the store also maintains sections (in our three major languages) in philosophy, history, art, science, sociology, film, music and eastern religion. Of course, we also have a children’s section for young readers looking to further explore their mother tongue or learn a new one.

Desperate Literature strives to be a space where good literature serves as a vehicle for dynamic cultural, linguistic and social exchange between Madrileños, extranjeros and travelers from around the world.

In this spirit we host readings, meetings, gallery shows, lectures, and run an international literary prize for short fiction.

We’re open every day 11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. & 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (Winter hours). We’re not on the internet that often, but we check email often enough. Better yet, please stop by the shop and say hi or give us a call at +34 911 88 80 89.

We sell books. Real books. Desperate ones. Paper and glue.
