Rising to the Challenge

I had been watching the Covid-19 crisis unfold from the comfort of self-isolation.

Watching bookshops, publishers and others rising to the challenge and offering other/extra service for those that were self-isolated, those that needed extra help, and to try and keep themselves going as viable businesses.

There had been many posts on social media, I had dutifully reposted those and commented on some, but it wasn’t until The Snug Bookshop suggested that an interactive map showing the locality of independents offering extra services would be a good idea that I realised I could do more.

Here’s a Google map of independent bookshops, publishers, freelancers, creatives, and other businesses that are trying to help and need help to keep their heads above water.

If you want added to the map, please use the Contact form on this site

If you want to help and support this blog and my other projects (Indie Publishers and Big Bearded Bookseller) you could become a Patreon which would help pay for my hosting, domain names, streaming services, and the occasional bag of popcorn to eat while watching films.

If you can’t support with a monthly subscription a tip at my Ko-Fi is always appreciated, as is buying things from my Ko-Fi Shop.

You can always email me on contact@bigbeardedbookseller.com with any suggestions.

What A Response!

Escalated

Escalated

That was totally unexpected, I thought this would be a nice little project. Sleepy like, pootling along gathering information slowly and steadily.

Post the map and then Bam! I’m suddenly being retweeted by Michael Rosen, getting hundreds of likes and site visits.

With that there are hundreds of suggestions of other bookshops and lots of people being extremely positive and helpful.

This does probably mean that the site and information will grow at a quicker pace than I was prepared for, but I will step up and try to get information on as quickly as I can.

If you want to help we could do with some funds which would buy time where I didn’t have to do work for others but could concentrate on this.

I have a Patreon and a Ko-Fi or subscribe to the weekly newsletter which keeps you up to date with what’s happening.

An Introduction

Forum Books

Forum Books

I’m aiming to build a resource highlighting the brilliant work that Independent Bookshops do, the hard graft that goes into these shops, the love and dedication.

Each Independent Bookshop is different and they shine a light on lots of different styles of writing and books, from lovely cosy children’s bookshops to radical bookshops that challenge the status quo and get targeted by the far right for their efforts.

I will also be looking at Independent Publishers and the work they do to keep new and challenging writing flowing on a separate blog, Indie Publishers, concentrating on indie publishers in the UK and Ireland

One of the things I really want to do is visit as many of these shops and publishers as possible and get their thoughts on the current state of books and writing and why they sell and/or produce books.

So keep an eye out for me on my travels.
