In this newsletter there are some great offers and initiatives to be part of. Tamsin Rosewell and SF Said have come up with the idea of #PassTheBookplate and Bluemoose Books have great extra terms for #IndieBookshops. There are also some great offers still running over from the last newsletter.

The idea of this newsletter is for it to be a great resource for publishers and authors to share their deals and offers with independent bookshops, so I’ll be asking publishers and authors regularly for contributions.

I can be contacted at Twitter @IndieBookshopUK and by email contact@indiebookshops.com if you have anything you would like included.

Please share the link to this newsletter with anyone you think will be interested in the offers. If you would like to be first to see the latest offers subscribe to the website and you’ll be notified whenever a new post is published.

The Woman in the Wardrobe book cover

Exclusive Offer

British Library Publishing are offering Indie Bookshops an extra 5% off their whole range until the end of June if you mention @IndieBookshopUK and this newsletter. Please email Maria.Vassilopoulos@bl.uk for details.

The Woman in the Wardrobe by Peter Shaffer is the latest title in their Crime Classic series;
“Things are certainly complicated, but this is hardly enough to deter Mr Verity. As he himself observes: ‘when the number of suspects is continually increasing, and the number of corpses remains constant, you get a sort of inflation. The value of your individual suspect becomes hopelessly depreciated. That, for the real detective, is a state of paradise.”

Though they are best know for the Crime Classic series I’m a huge fan of the ghost story compilations they release!

Gardeners have +5% on over 35,000 Penguin Random House and DK books from now until 10th July – Exclusively for UK Independent Booksellers. Visit http://gardners.com for a full listing.

Celine Kiernan bookplates

#PassTheBookplate is a new initiative started by SF Said and Tamsin Rosewell.

Many are now planning to at least partially reopen their doors on Monday 15th June, and we wanted to come up with a plan to give them some support – at least in their first month of reopening.

So we’ve made a simple, low-cost plan that can happen fast! Tamsin Rosewell from Kenilworth Books has used their bookshop network to ask high profile authors to sign bundles of bookplates for independent bookshops. The last thing bookshops need right now is to have to take a risk on buying signed stock. If we can instead send them signed bookplates, bookshops can order what they need, when they need it, and sell bookplated books in a steady stream.

If you wish to take part as an author please contact @autumnrosewell and if you’re a bookshop wanting a pack please contact me @IndieBookshopUK with your address and whether you would like an adult, kids, or mixed pack.

Sway bookplates

Dr Pragya Agarwal’s book came out last month, and has been getting great reviews.

Approaching the contentious issue of social bias with nuance and a broad range of exhaustive research, behavioural scientist, activist and writer, Agarwal demonstrates how unconscious prejudice is still immensely prevalent in contemporary society. Cogently argued and intensely persuasive, Sway is an enlightening account of how entrenched sets of stereotypes have become.

Pragya is offering to send signed bookplates to Indie Bookshops and can be contacted on Twitter.. @DrPragyaAgarwal

Laura Cummings bookplates

Laura Cumming is offering Indie Bookshops signed bookplates with the release of On Chapel Sands in paperback in April.

Shortlisted for both the Rathbones Folio Prize and the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, Laura Cumming’s singular memoir was one of the most critically acclaimed books of 2019. A deeply moving story of family and community that is striking and unforgettable, On Chapel Sands is part-true crime narrative, part-investigation into the subjectivity of memory and part-witness to a vanishing provincial way of life.

Laura is offering to send signed bookplates to Indie Bookshops and can be contacted on Twitter. @LauraCummingArt

Celine Kiernan bookplates

Celine Kiernan’s conclusion to The Wild Magic trilogy is coming out at the start of June and is up for pre-order.

I’ve personally loved the first two of the trilogy and am so looking forward to seeing what happens to Mup and her family in The Promise Witch, it’s been an exciting and fun adventure with some really creepy bits.

Celine is offering to send signed bookplates, bookmarks, and posters to Indie Bookshops and has made a digital card for any bookshops pre-order page and social media. Celine can be contacted on Twitter. @Celine_Kiernan – click the image for full size card

Virginia Moffat - The Wave

Virginia Moffat’s ‘The Wave’ came out last year, very pertinent for now. The book tells the story of a group of strangers who are unable to escape a tsunami and so instead they gather on a beach to make the most of the time left to them. It’s not for readers who want escapism in a time of pandemic, but feedback from several readers who’ve enjoyed it and found it helpful.

Moffatt conveys the pain, the heartbreak and the joy of human love so brilliantly, that I was frequently in tears – in fact I could barely read the last few pages through them. This is a wonderfully original story, which will make you look at the sea in a very different way, and despite the heartbreak make you cheer for every single one of its characters. This is a story that will stay with you long after you have reached the end. Highly recommended.

I’m passionate about indie bookshops and would love to have my books stocked in as many as possible, but I’m not very well known. My publishers (Unbound for Echo Hall, One More Chapter for The Wave) are both wonderful but have limited marketing and tend to focus on the ebooks. So I’ve had to do a lot of shouting for myself and I’m aware that indie bookshops have to be very careful what they buy, so are less likely to take a punt on someone like me.. If I could do a little something about The Wave & why it matters now that would be wonderful.

Recently Virginia held an online mini festival on Zoom, Discover New Authors Festival, looking at authors at the start of their writing journey, there are some links to great chats at the Facebook page.
